Building Your Dream Team

by Madalyn Sklar

Having the perfect "dream team" for your music career is a must these days. Doing everything yourself is way too difficult. I mean seriously between booking, promoting, performing, and everything that comes along with writing and recording it gets to be too much. I find it's best to elicit help. Develop a team... a dream team.

Just last week I was watching one of my favorite movies, Oceans Eleven, and in it they spent a great deal of time building the perfect team where each person plays a vital role. Have you thought about this? Mapping out a plan for who does what is imperative. We can't do it all and we certainly shouldn't do what we are not good at.

Now if you have a band you can easily delegate responsibilities to your band mates. Figure out who is best suited for each area. Maybe you're even ready to add a manager to the mix. If you are a solo performer it's a bit more difficult. You need to expand further out to find people to help you.

Don't be afraid to ask for help!

That is truly the bottom line. Asking for help will amaze you.

Here are some tips to get you started:

Find someone to help you with your graphic design. That would be your web site, posters, business cards and any other promotional items. Be sure your Myspace and other social networks have the same look and feel of your primary web site too. Branding is essential! Maybe you have a friend who is an incredible artist and pro on Photoshop. Put a call out to your fans on your list. You never know unless you ask.

Get a manager and/or booking agent. If you are not attracting the attention of the high power ones yet, it's okay to go with someone who is learning the ropes as long as you are comfortable with them and have a good feeling about it. You can also assign someone in your band the role of manager or booking agent. If you have a super fan who wants to help, they could end up being your best bet. I've seen all these scenarios work.

Get some advisors. Yeah you heard me right, advisors. Find mentors, people you look up to who can offer up advice and information. Don't be afraid to ask!

This should be a good start to get you thinking in the right direction. Building your perfect team is achievable. It starts with you.

Send me your thoughts on dream teams. Do you have one? How did YOU do it?
